Who we are

The Jamshedpur Jesuit Province is 75 years old, currently commemorating its Platinum Jubilee. We are 213 Jesuits working in this Province. Our head quarter is in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. Jamshedpur Jesuit Society (JJS) is the legal registered society through which we work in the predominant tribal states of Jharkhand and Orissa. We work mostly among the schedule tribes and schedule castes, who dwell mostly in the forest areas.

What do we do

We have a major social work organization called “Tribal Research and Training Center” (TRTC), located in the rural area of the tribal heartland of Chaibasa, in the state of Jharkhand. It is known for its tribal research and publication. Based on the findings and needs, we have been running the non-formal education centers in the villages, collaborate with and train the local village leaders in their constitutional rights, train rural youth with self-help programs like animal husbandry and skill-oriented training programs like tailoring, driving, auto mechanics, etc.   We also have another organization with the name “Orissa Citizens Initiative” (OCI), located in Kandhamal district of Orissa, a very backward tribal area of the state of Orissa, involved in similar capacity building and self-empowerment activities.  This is the area of 2008 riots, when hundreds of people lost their lives. With these social action centers, we are able to reach out to thousands of villagers. Both of these are well-established set-up with Jesuit and lay personnel engaged as full-time trainers. TRTC has been functioning from 1981 onwards and OCI has been functioning in the aftermath of the 2008 riots.

Our objective in establishing these centers in the states of Jharkhand and Orissa is to empower the poor and make them self-dependent through mobilization, awareness creation, leadership training, skill training of the people surrounded by hills and dense forests with minimum transport, health and other facilities. We are committed to empower them.
